The Sarge 01.08.29: Fabulous website! If I didn't work for Science Magazine, I might even have believed it. What struck me most is how willing I was to agree to such a thing inspite of my previous objection to cloning. It would be so interesting to raise a child who had previously existed to see what types of character traits are inherent and which are learned.

To all of those people who say we would be playing god, remember that god created this being first. We are only copying his work. (That is if god even exists.) Otherwise, we are not playing god anymore here than when couples go through invetro-fertilization.

However, if you look at how morals are developed, you realize that they come out of some biological necessity. Murder and incest are wrong because they hurt the survival of our species as a whole. For cloning to be morally wrong, it would have to have the same effect and it does. Cloning would make our species even less varied than it already is. Right now, our species has the smallest amount of variation (even though we look different) with the highest population. Those are the two primary indicators for a species on it's way out. Therefore, cloning should be morally wrong.

Reproductive human cloning. The conception of a genetically identical child to one of the parents. A new technology that offers the infertile the chance to have a biologically related child. For the first time in human history, infertile couples, who suffer so much, can have the family they need. This need for a closely bonded, related family, is completely missed by those well meaning friends who suggest (in the strongest possible terms) that you adopt. No-one can dictate your family to you, it is your choice. How a wonderful technology, that involves the creation of life, the creation of a much loved and wanted child, the creation of a family that would not otherwise have existed, has become so hated and misunderstood, remains almost beyond my comprehension.

The only aspect of reproductive human cloning that does concern me, is the developmental problems found in mammalian clones. But recently, exciting steps have been taken towards screening cloned mammalian embryos for abnormally expressed genes. This raises the possibility that we may soon be able to screen out epigenetically abnormal cloned embryos. If this screening can be proven to work in various mammals, logic dictates that it almost certainly work in humans too. As the safety and efficiency of cloning science continues to improve, this novel technology becomes an increasingly viable option for infertile people to conceive a related child.

With approximately one in six married couples having difficulty conceiving, the potential of this technology to fulfil the basic human need for a family, is genuinely immense.

As human cloning technology matures, each one of us must ask ourselves a simple question. Do we possess a fundamental human right to reproduce? The right to have a biologically related family? The right to have a child?

For me, this is the same basic right as the human right to life. And in many ways, I would put the right to reproduce above the right to life; as our children are the future, the next generation. You may die, your body may wither, but your genes survive. Through your children, a small part of you lives on.

Please don't deprive infertile couples of this fundamental human right. Cloning technology allows us to have a biologically related child to cherish and love. Yet our society is so blind to this fact. This is why I decided to write this message. In the hope that people who read it might start to look at human cloning with a different perspective. Might begin to comprehend the potential of this novel technology. I hope this simple message opens your mind, at least to some degree, to the beneficial aspects of human cloning.

I have never before written a message that I've wanted so many people to read. I have no idea what is the proper etiquette to request people forward this message to others, so I will simply ask. Please forward this message to anyone you think may find it interesting. You might just be able to give your friends a slightly more open minded perspective on an issue traditionally considered taboo.

I have no other aim in writing this message other that to try to open your eyes. By forwarding this message to your friends, I receive no benefit, commercial or otherwise. I have even left this message anonymous. My only desire is to broaden your perspectives to this new technology, and for you to consider what you may have originally thought unthinkable, that human cloning is not inherently wrong, immoral or evil. But that therapeutic human cloning for embryonic stem cells, has the potential to cure our neighbours, friends and family, and that reproductive human cloning offers infertile couples the chance to conceive a genetically related child.

Please don't allow fear of new technology, to destroy something as intrinsically important, as the fundamental human right to conceive a biologically related child.

On the issue of cloning, I really see no valid reasons not too clone. Clones are not identical to the DNA doner, aside from the age difference, clones are generally only 98% geneticly identical (2% of DNA is in the mitochondria), and nearly all of personality and actual appearance (aside from generic traits) are defined by atmosphere and enviroment. Lowering the gene pool is not really a concern, as there are still over 6,000,000,000 of us out there, and no one would likely be cloned that repetitivly. The issue of clones not having a soul I find to be ludicris, whether you subscribe to an organized religion or otherwise. Especially since indentical twins are actually more perfect clones (100% match rather than 98%) than human
cloning would produce. And I beleive it is universally agreed that if a soul does exist that identical twins each possess one. Well I suppose that's enough ranting for now. Oh, and by the way some of the posters here seem to be real idiots (not neccesaraly the anti-cloning ones). I am refering to the people that go "Oh clone me so I can play with myself" or "I want to have a dozen Cindy Crawford clones, she is hot." It is obvious that these people are completly ignorant to what cloning is, and likely haven't even read the sections on cloning on this site.
